Updated Guidance on Visa Interview Location from the U.S. Department of State
Effective immediately, the U.S. Department of State requires nonimmigrant visa (NIV) applicants to schedule interviews at a U.S. embassy or consulate located in their country of nationality or current residence. Applicants must demonstrate residency in the country where they apply. Those who attempt to schedule interviews outside of their country of residence may face significantly longer wait times, increased risk of visa denial, and non-refundable, non-transferable fees.
This policy applies broadly across visa categories but excludes diplomatic and official visas (A, G, C-2, C-3, NATO), UN-related travel, and rare emergency or humanitarian cases. Existing appointments will generally not be canceled, but all prior guidance on interview location is now superseded.
Applicants seeking to renew a visa in the same category must schedule an in-person interview. Nationals from countries where routine NIV services are unavailable must apply at a designated consular post unless residing elsewhere. To ensure compliance and avoid delays, students and scholars should consult the website of the specific U.S. embassy or consulate for the most accurate and up-to-date information on application procedures, appointment availability, and operating status.
