Restricted Regions Definitions

EFFECTIVE 18 May 2022:  IN ACCORDANCE WITH UT SYSTEM GUIDANCE, INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL TO LOCATIONS NOTED ON THE RESTRICTED REGIONS LIST MUST BE APPROVED BY THE IOC. 

Restricted regions are broken up into the following categories:

• Variable Risk*

Many countries have different ratings for various regions of the country.  If the country you are traveling to has multiple ratings you must submit a Restricted Regions Travel Request for the specific region you will be traveling to.  For example Country X- Overall Rating- Low.  However, Region Y of Country X has a High Rating.  If you are traveling to Region Y of Country X you must submit a Restricted Regions Travel Request. Students traveling to a location with a variable risk rating must submit a restricted regions travel request for all travel.

• Extreme Risk- Do not travel- Level 4

All international locations with a US State Department Travel Advisory Level 4 (Do not travel) or CDC Travel Notice: Warning Level 4- UTSA Staff and Faculty must submit a Restricted Regions Travel Request to the IOC for review.  UTSA students are not authorized to travel.

• High Risk- Reconsider travel- Level 3

All international locations with a US State Department Travel Advisory Level 3 (Reconsider travel), or a CDC Travel Notice: Warning Level 3- UTSA Staff, Faculty, and students must submit a Restricted Regions Travel Request to the IOC for review.  

• Moderate Risk- Exercise increased caution- Level 2

In a country with an overall US State Department Travel Advisory Level 2 (Exercise increased caution) or Level 1 (Exercise normal precautions) or CDC Travel Notice: Alert Level 2.- UTSA Graduate and undergraduate students must submit a Restricted Regions Travel Request to the IOC. 

• Low Risk- Exercise Normal Precautions- Level 1

Faculty, staff, and students are not required to seek IOC approval for Low-Risk locations.
