"My experience in Puerto Rico focused on ecological preservation and alleviating the effects of Hurricane Maria. While there, I participated in environmental restoration, disaster relief, and community support projects, but I also learned much about PR culture, including food, music, history, and lifestyle. Although PR is in the US, there was a sharp contrast from what I expected of a US territory to what I witnessed. Very importantly though, my experience helped me redefine quality service as an act and habit that goes far beyond just volunteerism. Additionally, as a result of my trip, I recognized how I can be a better active citizen and advocate in my community. I encourage every student to purse some academic and/or personal enrichment experience with a global focus because such experiences will only enhance your undergraduate career."
