Before Orientation

Required Items
In order to avoid delays in registration, all new international students should complete the following prior to arrival:

Apply for your F-1 or J-1 visa as soon as you receive your I-20 or DS-2019 Form
1. Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee
a. The SEVIS I-901 fee is required for all F and J visa students. Without the fee payment, you will not be eligible to apply for your F-1/J-1 visa. Learn more about the SEVIS I-901 fee.
2. Apply for an F-1 or J-1 visa at an American embassy or consulate
a. After paying the I-901 fee and getting a receipt, you can apply for a visa at an American embassy or consulate. The following links will assist with the visa application process.

Make your travel arrangements
Plan to arrive in time to attend New International Student Orientation. Check the orientation date.
If you arrive late, you may not have enough time to complete all of your needed requirements. As a consequence, you may be unable to register for classes. This will negatively affect your visa status.

Activate your myUTSA ID. Check your registration holds in the Automated Student Access Program (ASAP)
Registration holds on your student account signify that there are requirements to complete before you can register for classes. You can check your registration holds in ASAP.

To access your ASAP account, you first need to activate your myUTSA ID (abc123).

Check your email you listed on your admission application. You should have received an email from myUTSAid@utsa.edu with a link to activate your myUTSA ID.

You will be asked to verify your identity before activating your myUTSA ID. Once you have activated your myUTSA ID, you will be able to access ASAP and use its services.

Complete Health Requirements Before Orientation

Health Requirement 1: Meningococcal Meningitis Immunization.

The State of Texas has required that in order to register for classes all students under the age of 22 are required to document their Meningococcal Meningitis immunization. Only the quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against 4 types of meningococcus bacteria, (MCV4, MPSV4) will be accepted.

You must receive Meningococcal Meningitis immunization during the 5 year period prior to but not later than 10 days before the first day of the semester.

To expedite documentation processing, please include your Banner ID (@01234567) or your MyUTSAID (ABC123).

Submit proof of your Meningococcal immunization records to Student Health Services by email or fax by the deadlines. Your immunization records must be translated in English.


Health Requirement 2: Tuberculosis (TB) Test

It is highly recommended that you take a TB blood test in your home country. Student Health Services accepts the following blood tests:
QuantiFERON GOLD
T-Spot


*TB testing must be performed on of after March 1st for the summer or fall semesters and on or after September 1st for the following spring semester.*

Student Health Services does not accept these tests:
ELISA
IgG
IgM
Other forms of rapid testing
PPD from other countries

If your test result is in a language other than English, please have a translation service translate them into English prior to submission to Student Health Services.

Take the TSI Assessment at UTSA Testing Services or complete your Pre-Assessment Activity
Undergraduate students who have not yet met Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements outlined by the State of Texas may be required to take exams before reigstering for classes. A TSI Assessment can be taken before orientation or during orientation week, by appointment.
The TSI Pre-Assessment Activity must be completed before taking the TSI Assessment.

Pre-Assessment Activity

Before students are allowed to register for the TSI Assessment exam, they must complete a Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA). At UTSA, the PAA must be completed online at: https://www.tsipreview.com/welcome/ut-sanantonio

All first-time freshmen who are Incomplet are required to take the Pre-Assessment Activity prior to registering for their TSI Assessment.

Students must complete their PAA online prior to testing registration. Registration for the TSI Assessment may be done online through ASAP after completion has been determined by the Testing Services office.

Take the Quantitative Literacy Assessment Test (QLAT) with UTSA Testing Services
Quantitative Literacy Assessment Test (QLAT) is required for all freshmen students entering UTSA. This exam is required for all majors. Exam time is 30 minutes. Testing Services will provide this test during an assigned time during orientation. For those of you who miss orientation, log on to ASAP and schedule to take the QLAT.

Take the Math or Chemistry Placement Test at UTSA Testing Services

After taking TSI, you may qualify to take a Math and/or Chemistry placement test.
