Marketing Strategies

The most effective marketing strategies are through classroom presentations and the program leader should consider marketing their programs within the classroom. The Education Abroad office helps market the program and provides marketing materials as needed. Below are some marketing ideas to get you started:

Social Media and Websites

A page for the program within the UTSA Study Abroad portal will be created where you can upload promotional information and details from your program proposal. Students will apply to the program through this webpage.

You may also want to create a webpage that students can access through your department’s website. This is a good place to share pictures or videos, testimonials, travel plans, etc.  Make sure that your site links to the program page in the UTSA Study Abroad portal and does not have contradictory content.

Marketing Tips

  • Start with choosing a simple and appropriate title that grabs the attention and interest of potential students
  • Aim for concepts that students will instantly connect and understand.
  • Write a program description to explain the program and the goals of the course.
  • Use photos and video as a way for students to better imagine themselves in your program.
  • Describe not just what students will be doing, but what they will be getting from the program.
  • Use peer-to-peer marketing. Ask current and past participants to help spread the word via social media and personal connections.

Examples of departmental webpages:

Since students are accustomed to using social media in their everyday life, social media is also a great tool for sharing information, advertising events, and giving an overview of the program.

Flyers and Brochures

  • List only the most pertinent information: title, program and info session dates, contact info, and images of the site or past programs.
  • Make them simple and informative.
  • Direct students to the program website and contact information.

Where to post and share:

  • Special events such as the Study Abroad Fair in September and February
  • Bulletin boards, residence halls, academic departments with a connection to the program, and student affairs offices
  • UTSA Education Abroad can distribute and post flyers within our office
