Fulbright at UTSA

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational and cultural exchange program. It awards roughly 8,000 grants annually to study, teach and conduct research across 160 countries worldwide.

UTSA is proud to have been named a Fulbright HSI Leader by the U.S. Department of State in 2022 and in 2023. With a commitment to cultivating globally minded individuals, UTSA recognizes the profound value of experiential learning in shaping well-rounded, culturally aware leaders. The Fulbright Program is a beacon of opportunity, offering scholars the chance to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, exchange ideas, and foster meaningful connections across borders. For UTSA students and faculty alike, the Fulbright represents not just a prestigious accolade, but a transformative experience that enriches perspectives and fosters invaluable personal and professional growth.

Fulbright for Faculty

Faculty lecture abroad

The Fulbright Program offers several programs for faculty scholars at higher education institutions who are U.S. citizens. The primary program is the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, which offers over 400 awards annually to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects around the world.

More than 75 UTSA faculty have received the Fulbright U.S. Scholar award since 1979. A list of UTSA Fulbrighters can be found online at the Fulbright Scholar Directory.

How to Apply

UTSA offers a $5,000 incentive to faculty who are selected as Fulbright U.S. Scholars, through the university’s Targeted Scholarly Award program managed by the Office of Research.

UTSA faculty who are interested in applying for a Fulbright should follow the steps on the Targeted Scholarly Awards page. The Office of Research’s Faculty Development team offers application assistance if needed, but faculty are also encouraged to reach out to Jason Yaeger, Ph.D., UTSA’s Fulbright Scholar Liaison, for guidance.

Fulbright for Students

Students hiking abroad

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers five programs for students who are U.S. citizens. The two most common are the Study/Research Awards, which provides awards for students to pursue education and research abroad, and the English Teaching Assistant Program, which places recipients in classrooms abroad to assist the local English teachers.

Twenty-four UTSA students have received a Fulbright award since 1974. However, the number of student Fulbright recipients has increased significantly in recent years since the establishment of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards in 2019. A list of UTSA Student Fulbrighters can be found online at the Fulbright Grantee Directory

How to Apply

UTSA students who are interested in applying for any of the Fulbright student programs should reach out to the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards to receive application guidance and support.

UTSA is proud to have hosted more than 30 international scholars across a wide variety of disciplines through the Fulbright Visiting Scholars program.
