Equity Advocacy

Through the Equity Advocacy Initiative, UTSA will develop an overarching framework for implementing the recommendations put forth by the 21st Century Learning Environments Task Group to foster healthy and inclusive learning environments. The initiative will formally connect those efforts to the work of tactical teams on degree pathways and higher education access as a part of our fundamental commitment to diversity, inclusion and the success of UTSA students.

In support of the initiative, UTSA’s colleges and academic support divisions will develop new and enhance existing activities to advance diversity, inclusion and justice.

Diversity and Inclusion in Study Abroad

We know that students with the least resources are least likely to pursue study abroad.  We also know LGBTQ+ students face additional obstacles in studying abroad. In order to address this gap, we are pursuing a series of interrelated actions to bring global experiences to more students. Beginning this year we will:

  • Benchmark the participation of Pell-eligible, first-gen and LGBTQ+ students in study abroad
  • Provide tailored resources on our website and in presentations that address the specific concerns of first-gen, lower income and LGBTQ+ students and those of their parents
  • Collaborate with faculty on virtual international experiences for the benefit of more students;
  • Reach out specifically to these specific student groups with customized marketing that answers their objections and encourages participation
  • Work with Development to raise funds for education abroad scholarships.
